What Is a Weather Resistant Barrier?

A Weather Resistant Barrier (WRB) is a building material installed behind the exterior cladding of a building. Its primary purpose is to protect the building structure from water intrusion, while still allowing water vapor to pass through, preventing moisture buildup inside the wall assembly.

At Exteriors Design LLC, we've installed WRBs on hundreds of commercial and multi-family residential projects across Portland, OR and the Pacific Northwest. In our experience, the WRB is the most consequential decision in the entire exterior envelope system.

Types of WRB Systems

There are three main categories of WRB systems used in commercial construction:

1. Self-Adhesive WRB

Products like Blueskin VP160, RevealShield SA, and WrapShield SA are applied directly to the sheathing with an adhesive backing. These provide the highest level of air and water resistance and are ideal for high-performance building envelopes.

2. Mechanically Attached WRB

Products like Commercial Tyvek and Vaproshield are fastened mechanically to the sheathing. These are cost-effective options for projects where budget is a primary consideration.

3. Liquid Applied WRB

Products like Prosoco and Stoguard are applied as a liquid that cures to form a seamless monolithic membrane. These are particularly effective around complex geometries and penetrations.

Why Does WRB Selection Matter?

Water intrusion is the leading cause of building envelope failures. A properly selected and installed WRB can last the lifetime of the building, while a poor installation can result in costly remediation projects within 5-10 years.

Key performance factors include vapor permeability, air resistance, water resistance, UV exposure tolerance, and compatibility with the cladding system.

WRB and the Oregon Climate

Portland's climate — wet winters, moderate summers — makes WRB selection particularly critical. Our team at Exteriors Design has deep experience selecting the right WRB for Pacific Northwest conditions. We work with all major manufacturers including Henry (Blueskin), DuPont (Tyvek), and Vaproshield.
