A self-adhesive weather resistant barrier (SA WRB) is a high-performance building membrane that bonds directly to exterior wall sheathing without mechanical fasteners. The adhesive backing forms a continuous, gap-free seal around the entire building envelope — providing dramatically superior air and water resistance compared to mechanically attached systems.

How Self-Adhesive WRB Installation Works
Installation begins with a thorough sheathing inspection — all penetrations, gaps, and surface defects are addressed before the WRB goes on. The adhesive membrane is then applied working from bottom to top, with each course overlapping the previous by a minimum of 2 inches horizontally and 6 inches at vertical seams. Around windows, doors, and penetrations, our crews use compatible flashing tapes and liquid-applied details to create a true continuous air and water barrier.
Unlike mechanically attached systems, SA WRBs leave no fastener penetrations through the membrane — each hole is a potential entry point for water, and SA systems eliminate that risk entirely. This is especially critical in Portland where annual rainfall averages 37 inches.
