What Are Cladding Support Brackets and Subframe Systems?

Cladding support brackets and subframe systems are the structural backbone of every rainscreen cladding installation. These engineered systems transfer the dead load and wind load of exterior cladding panels back to the building structure while maintaining a drained, ventilated cavity between the WRB and the cladding face. Proper subframe selection, engineering, and installation are as critical to long-term cladding performance as the panel material itself.

Exteriors Design LLC designs and installs cladding support systems for all types of commercial exterior cladding — from simple galvanized steel furring for fiber cement to sophisticated thermally broken aluminum bracket systems for metal, HDFC, GFRC, and ACM panel cladding. We work with NVELOPE and Knight Wall Systems thermal bracket systems on projects where continuous insulation and thermal bridging minimization are required.

Types of Cladding Support Systems

Galvanized Steel Furring (G90/G185): The most economical subframe option, used primarily behind fiber cement siding and metal lap panels. G90 and G185 galvanized steel studs and furring channels provide a cost-effective drainage plane and attachment substrate for lighter cladding systems.

Galvalume Furring: Aluminum-zinc alloy coated steel furring with enhanced corrosion resistance. Used in coastal or high-humidity environments where standard galvanized steel would have reduced service life.

NVELOPE Thermally Broken Brackets: Engineered aluminum bracket systems with polyamide thermal breaks that isolate the exterior aluminum from the interior building structure, dramatically reducing thermal bridging through the cladding attachment system. Required on high-performance and Passive House projects.

Knight Wall Systems: Continuous insulation attachment systems that support exterior rigid insulation and cladding panels in a single assembly, enabling compliance with Oregon and Washington continuous insulation energy code requirements.

Why Subframe Engineering Matters

Every cladding subframe must be engineered to resist the specific wind loads at the project location, accommodate thermal movement of the cladding panel material, transfer loads to the building structure at appropriate intervals, and maintain required drainage cavity dimensions. Our team works with licensed structural engineers to ensure every subframe system is properly designed and specified.
