What we find when we open a wall

This is a real job, not a stock photo. Once the old siding comes off you can finally see the sheathing, and that is where the story is. Wet spots, black staining, soft plywood around the windows.

Some houses are clean back there and we tell you so. When they are not, we show you before anything gets covered back up, and you get a price for the repair before we do it. Nobody should find out about rot after the invoice.

We side apartment buildings for a living

Most of our work is four and five story buildings for general contractors, where the inspection is real and a leak is somebody's lawsuit. Apartments, condos and commercial projects across Portland and Vancouver.

Your house gets those crews and that same wall detailing. Most siding companies have never had to build a wall to that standard.

Water first

The barrier behind the siding is the part that matters.

How to tell your siding is done

Siding fails from the back first. By the time you can see it from the street, water has usually been getting behind it for a while.

Soft or spongy spots

Press on it. If it gives, water is already in the board.

Paint that will not hold

Repainting every few years usually means the substrate is soaking.

Cracked or split boards

Splits let water straight into the wall behind the siding.

Gaps at joints and trim

Old caulk lets go. That is the most common entry point we find.

Bubbling or warping

Board is swelling from moisture and will not go back flat.

Mold or dark streaks

Often a sign the wall behind is staying wet after it rains.

What we put on

James Hardie

Lap siding, shingle, and panel. Fiber cement does not rot or swell, and it is non combustible. This is what most Portland homes get.

Pre finished fiber cement

Nichiha and CeraClad come with the color already on from the factory, so there is no painting after the install.

Cedar and composite

Real wood or engineered composite when you want that look. We will tell you straight what the upkeep is.

How it goes

Our own crews. We show you anything we find behind the old siding before we cover it.

"I have worked with a number of other contractors and know when I'm working with someone who knows their business and takes genuine pride in the quality of the work they're doing, and that certainly describes Vito and the sub contractors he works with. Highly recommend Exteriors Design for any level of remodeling or renovation jobs you may be doing!"
